The Lawyers’ Committee told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Tuesday that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) case against Donald Trump is entering doom territory.
Earlier, Trump’s defense team cross-examined Michael Cohen, one of the prosecution’s key witnesses. For several hours, Trump attorney Todd Blanche said: worked to impeach Cohen’s character As an honest and reliable witness.
“As the days go by, it looks weaker and weaker in this case.”
That strategy worked, according to attorney Bill Brennan.
“This witness is a perfect fit for Todd Blanche,” he told Tapper. “And all the people are second-guessing all the questions — sit down, get some popcorn, and let Mr. Blanche do her job.
“The judge will charge this jury that if a witness is biased or prejudiced about the game, they should take that testimony with caution,” Brennan explained. “The witness is going to say, ‘They robbed a bank, they drove a car, it was blue and it was raining.’ It’s not “I want you to do it.” This Cohen should be condemned. ”
Meanwhile, lawyer and CNN analyst Carrie Cordero said prosecutors did not meet the burden necessary to convict Trump.
“I was here with you when the indictment first came out, and at the time I thought it was very unconvincing. And as the trial continues, prosecutors say that I see we haven’t gotten to the part where we actually proved that “there was an intent to commit the underlying crime and influence the election,” Cordero explained.
“My big question is, what are the defense going to do when the final verdict with Michael Cohen comes down? Are they going to actually mount a defense or are they going to stand up and say, ‘What are you going to do? What do you think?’ The prosecutors haven’t done anything yet.’ I took that burden,” she explained.
If the defense dropped the case, it would be an “overblown” move, the panel agreed.
And that’s a strategy Trump’s defenders should consider, Cordero said.
“At this point, there’s a strong argument that the defense should stand up and say, ‘Look, the prosecution is not doing its job in this case. This is all the prosecution has to prove. They haven’t proven it.’ ‘We didn’t get there and it’s time for everyone to go home,’ she explained.
Attorney Michael van der Veen agreed that the case was weak and would only get worse.
“As you know, this case is not progressing the way I expected,” Van der Veen said. “As the days go by, it looks like it’s getting weaker and weaker in this case. I think it’s probably wearing less and less defensively.”
Cohen is scheduled to return to the stand Thursday when the trial resumes.
