Concerns Over National Guard Deployment in D.C.
MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle expressed concerns on Monday regarding the deployment of armed District of Columbia National Guard members, describing it as a “disaster waiting to happen.”
Days after President Trump announced federal support for Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to combat rising crime, Barnicle pointed out that the National Guard typically doesn’t operate in high-crime neighborhoods. He implied that their presence wouldn’t address the core issues of crime in the area.
Barnicle noted that the DC Police Station employs around 3,400 sworn officers and approximately 400 more in other roles. He remarked that hiring has stalled due to funding issues, highlighting that local law enforcement does not receive federal funds because the government currently prioritizes national security staff. He emphasized that the National Guard wouldn’t be effective in tackling crime in areas like Wheeler Road in southeastern Washington, as their presence is often limited to safer districts.
He went on to say that deploying the National Guard to high-crime areas would be misguided, suggesting that many National Guard members are inexperienced—coming from non-urban areas and inadequately prepared for urban crime situations.
On another note, Trump criticized Maryland Governor Wes Moore over crime in Baltimore, suggesting he could send the National Guard if Moore needs assistance in managing what he termed “out-of-control crime.” He similarly addressed Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, linking both comments on social media.
Since Trump’s intensified focus on crime in the capital, reports indicate over 1,000 arrests have occurred along with more than 100 firearms recovered.
