Pelosi Collects Funds for Redistricting in California as Fire Victims Endure Hardships

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is spearheading a fundraiser to support Democratic efforts for new gerrymandered districts in California.

Pelosi, who is 85, has been portrayed as a key figure in Governor Gavin Newsom’s fundraising initiatives, offering guidance and making calls to influential Democratic donors.

However, both Pelosi and Newsom have demonstrated a lack of nuance in their fundraising for the many fire victims in California.

According to reports:

Pelosi enthusiastically began discussing a private funding call that happened that day, as recounted by three anonymous sources. She then passed the phone to Newsom to finalize the arrangements. This coordination was partly due to awareness of complex federal regulations around soliciting large donations, and partly out of respect for Newsom.

Newsom has initiated an action for district changes under Proposition 50, seeking private legal counsel and support over the summer. He opted to move away from an independent mapping commitment. Pelosi advised California legislators facing redistricting challenges, and her early backing acted as a signal for lawmakers from both Sacramento and Washington, D.C. to join in.

Now, as a crucial figure in a large fundraising campaign, Pelosi aims to raise over $200 million, aggressively urging top donors to mobilize their networks.

For context, the recent Fireaid concert generated $100 million.
