Earlier this week, a pickup truck driver was captured on cell phone video doing a burnout at the Rainbow Pride crosswalk in Huntington, West Virginia. WOWK-TV reported.
Police said Wednesday’s incident happened at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and 10th Street, where the crosswalk was painted over the weekend with rainbow-colored jewels.
“This isn’t a protest, this is bullshit. People need to try harder.”
You can watch the video here A burnout is happening: the truck driver revved his engine, leaving what appear to be tire marks on at least one bar of the crosswalk and emitting a huge amount of exhaust in the process.
Huntington Police Chief Phil Watkins told WOWK that police are aware of the video and are investigating.
“The nonprofit organization Huntington Pride raised funds throughout the community to pay for the paint and hire an artist, but the city will coordinate with Huntington Pride going forward for any modifications to the artwork that need to be made,” Brian Chambers, communications director for the city of Huntington, told the station.
Allie Layman, president of Huntington Pride He told WCHS-TV She said, “I’m not surprised. People in our community are usually bullied. I’ve been bullied since high school so it’s not a shock to me.”
Layman, who is also a city council member, added to WCHS, “The jewel is every aspect of every color, every texture, every element that unites not just the LGBT community but the entire community. The people of the Appalachians are just as resilient as this jewel.”
Resident Justin Murdock added to WCHS, “A lot of the people that are making threats and doing things are people from out of town that have never been here before. But for the people that actually live here, this is the jewel of the Jewel City. We persevere, and so does this piece of art. We will continue to make it better.”
William Cummins told WCHS he is not taking sides with any particular community in taking a stand during Pride Month. “People should not put their private lives on display for all to see for the sake of any cause. Private lives are private for a reason, but this kind of behavior is not right. [the crosswalk]”This isn’t a protest, this is bullshit. People need to try harder.”
Earlier this month, one adult and two juveniles were charged with felony assault in Spokane, Washington, after they were caught riding scooters through a Pride crosswalk.
