The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has confirmed that they will not provide security for Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s wife during her upcoming trip to Syria and Lebanon, which are considered high-risk areas. This clarification comes despite earlier claims from the mayor’s office asserting that she would be accompanied by a police detail.
An NYPD spokesperson stated that officers are not sent to countries with Level 4 travel advisories for personal travel purposes. Mamdani’s wife, Rama Douwaji, is traveling to visit family in September, in regions explicitly listed on the State Department’s “Do Not Travel” list due to terrorism risks.
The mayor’s office had mentioned that the NYPD had recommended a security detail for Douwaji’s travels. However, after learning that the NYPD would not be providing escorts, Mamdani described the situation as a “miscommunication” among staff during a recent interview.
Scott Munro, president of the NYPD Detective Endowment Association, criticized the notion that detectives would accompany Douwaji, emphasizing that officers are dedicated to serving New Yorkers and should not be deployed for personal travel in dangerous territories.
In the past, Mamdani has made several statements regarding the police department, advocating for significant changes and even defunding the NYPD. This inconsistency in his views, especially given his previous assertions about police safety, raises questions about his relationship with law enforcement.
Additionally, Mamdani has faced backlash for his comments on various political issues, including his stance on Israel and criticism of the NYPD, which he has linked to the Israeli Defense Forces in past discussions.
This evolving narrative has left many wondering about the dynamics between the mayor, his administration, and the NYPD, especially in light of recent events where Mamdani was met with disapproval at a pro-police gathering.
As this story develops, it remains to be seen how the mayor’s office will address the implications of this security decision.
