Polls Show Netanyahu, Right-wing Surging in Wartime Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approval rating is soaring in Israel, according to two new polls, despite pressure from U.S. Democrats and left-wing protests in Israel for new elections and a change of government.

Bloomberg News report According to a new investigation by Israel’s Channel 12,

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is beginning to regain popularity after more than a year of political struggle, outperforming his main rival, Benny Gantz, in approval ratings for the first time since the war with Hamas began in October.

Channel 12 investigation In a survey of 500 voters representing different segments of Israeli society conducted on Wednesday, 36% chose Netanyahu and 30% chose him when asked “Who do you think is best suited to be prime minister?” [main rival Benny] Gantz. The margin of error was 4.4%.

These results are different vote According to a poll by Israel’s Channel 14 (Israeli TV’s equivalent to America’s Fox News), Netanyahu’s Likud party is gaining strength and would win 27 seats in Israel’s 120-seat Knesset if elections were held today. Gantz’s party would get only 19. Right-wing parties could form a coalition with a combined 58 seats, while left-wing parties would win 52 and Arab parties the remaining 10.

President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) want to oust Netanyahu, as do Israeli leftist groups, some of which are funded by the U.S. government. But Israelis don’t think so.

Israelis support Netanyahu primarily because they support his policy of defeating Hamas and not allowing a Palestinian state to be created as a result of war, because doing so would be no revenge for the October 7 terrorist attacks.

The Biden administration has ironically strengthened Prime Minister Netanyahu at home by opposing the Israeli military operation that wiped out Hamas’ last battalion in the city of Rafah and by insisting on the creation of a Palestinian state.
