The late Pope Francis tried to welcome the Catholic Church more than he was, and despite being a stubborn critic of what is often referred to as “dangerous” gender ideology, he was upset among traditional conservative Catholics.
He maintained traditional Catholic teachings about gender and sexuality in official documents, but the Pope’s actions often told different, vague stories.
“Being gay is not a crime,” Francis once told The Associated Press in 2023. It was the first time the Pope had addressed the legal aspects of homosexual law around the world, and LGBTQ activists praised him.

Francis also called the criminalization of homosexuality “unjust” and added that some Catholic bishops in other countries may be supporters of banning it for cultural reasons.
“These bishops need to have a conversion process,” he said. “I ask for kindness, as God has for each of us.”
Also, in 2023, the controversial Vatican document, “Fiducia suppliers” – a declaration by Dicaster for the Doctrine of Faith (DDF) – issued guidance for priests to bless same-sex couples. According to Pope Francis, blessings are for the individual, not for the individual.
The document states that “rituals for the blessing of couples should not be provided or promoted in irregular circumstances.”
“At the same time, we must not interfere or prohibit the intimacy of the Church to those in our church in any situation where we may seek God’s help through simple blessings.”

Francis raised even more concern among conservatives when the Vatican determined in 2023 that transgender people could be baptized and become godparents, and that participation would not cause “confusion” or scandal.

Meanwhile, in a March 2023 interview with Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Pope Francis called gender ideology “one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations.”
“All humanity is the tension of different things. It is to grow through tension of different things,” the Pope said. “The problem with gender is diluting the differences and making the world the same.
