Pope Leo XIV has expressed his sorrow and called for a ceasefire following an attack on Gaza’s only Catholic Church, which was reportedly hit by an Israeli strike. This incident resulted in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries.

The Pope’s sentiment was conveyed through his representative, who mentioned how deeply saddened he feels about the loss of life at the Holy Family Catholic Church. He also extended his spiritual support to Father Gabriele Romanelli and the parish community.

Parolin emphasized the Pope’s renewed insistence on an immediate ceasefire and expressed hope for regional dialogue and lasting peace.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attack and criticized Israel’s actions. She pointed out, “The Israeli attack on Gaza included strikes on the Holy Family Church. The ongoing military actions against civilians are simply unacceptable.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the reports concerning damage to the church and stated that the situation is being investigated. They reaffirmed that they do not target religious sites and strive to avoid civilian casualties.

The Latin Patriarchy of Jerusalem indicated that Father Gabriel Romanelli sustained minor injuries during the strike.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein echoed a similar sentiment of sorrow regarding the damage and loss of life caused by the incident. He reiterated that Israel does not purposely target religious sites.

The ongoing conflict has undoubtedly left the community in distress, and it’s crucial to address the need for safety and religious freedom during such tumultuous times. There’s a collective hope among those affected that, despite the chaos, peace may still be achievable.
