Pope Leo XIV Celebrates His First Mass
Pope Leo XIV, who has made history as the first North American pope, expressed that his election is both a heavy burden and a blessing while conducting his inaugural Mass at the Sistine Chapel.
On Friday, he returned to the famed chapel to connect with the over 1.4 billion Catholics under his leadership.
The Pope advocated for more outreach and missionary efforts, sharing concerns that many in both religious and secular circles have, perhaps, lost their faith in Jesus Christ.
“Nowadays, it seems many prefer charismatic leaders or strong figures, even though Jesus was indeed a person of great respect,” he remarked, translated from Italian.
Pope Leo pointed out that Christian faith is often viewed as frivolous or rooted in weakness in certain contexts, where societal values favor technology, wealth, and success.
As he embarks on this significant role, the Pope must navigate various challenges, including how his followers will respond to pressing church issues.
While he did not explain the choice of the name Leo, it likely reflects a nod to earlier popes respected for their commitment to social issues.
Like his predecessor, Pope Francis, Leo is anticipated to prioritize compassion and humanity, particularly in situations involving migration and poverty.
However, the dynamics between this American pope and the current administration remain uncertain, especially around divisive topics like immigration and human rights.
Pope Leo also expressed concerns about declining faith, suggesting it contributes to a loss of human dignity and overall life meaning.
“In many settings, speaking the truth of the Gospel is challenging; believers often face ridicule or outright opposition,” he said. “The decline in faith can lead to neglect of mercy, a crisis in family values, and various other societal wounds.”
