Pope Leo XIV Issues Warning on Traditionalist Groups’ Actions

Pope Leo XIV recently sent a last-minute appeal to traditionalist Catholic breakaway groups, urging them to reconsider plans to consecrate four bishops without Vatican approval. He highlighted this move as a “very grave sin” that could exacerbate the longstanding rift with the church.

In a letter addressed to the Rev. David Pagliarani, the leader of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), the Pope expressed his concerns. “We sincerely ask you to turn back!” he urged, signaling the seriousness of the situation.

This situation marks a significant challenge in Leo’s papacy, as he has focused on reconciling divisions within the church since his ascent. The SSPX has long claimed to uphold genuine Catholic teachings, yet their intentions to consecrate new bishops have drawn scrutiny. They argue that there are “necessary circumstances” warranting new bishops for their followers.

Consecrating a bishop independently, under canon law, is an act viewed as schismatic, leading to automatic excommunication for both the bishop ordained and the one conducting the ceremony. This echoes a similar incident from 1988 when the SSPX’s founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, performed such consecrations, resulting in excommunications that were ultimately lifted in 2009 in an effort to mend relations.

Despite ongoing dialogue, the SSPX remains outside the formal church structure, expanding to include hundreds of priests and seminarians around the globe. As they navigate this contentious issue, the Pope’s message underscores the complexities of maintaining unity within the Catholic Church.
