Pope Urges Action on Europe’s Population Crisis

Pope Leo XIV has called for European leaders to take serious measures to tackle the continent’s population crisis by strengthening family structures and reaffirming the importance of human life.

This plea for action comes during a concerning demographic decline that poses threats not only to Europe’s social and economic fabric but also to the cultural identity of various nations.

“The rejection of the Christian inspiration of the founders of the EU institutions has ushered in a period of dramatic barrenness,” he noted.

Back in 1970, the birth rate in Europe stood at 16.4 births per 1,000 individuals. Fast forward to 2024, and this number has plummeted to 7.9.

According to Eurostat, the total fertility rate for the European Union was recorded at 1.34 births per woman in 2024, with nearly 25% of newborns having mothers who were born outside of Europe.

To maintain a stable population without relying on immigration, a birth rate of 2.1 is necessary.

Even considering the influx of foreign-born residents, projections indicate that the EU’s population will decrease by 11.7% by 2100, going from about 452 million to 399 million. Countries like Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Poland are expected to see declines of 19.3%, 24%, 30.1%, and 31.6%, respectively.

In a recent address to European officials, including MEPs, the Pope stressed that the demographic situation signifies a crucial turning point for Europe’s future.

He echoed sentiments similar to those of his predecessor, Pope Francis, remarking that Europe is aging rapidly—not merely due to its rich history but because of its diminishing younger population.

Highlighting that “children are the future,” he pointed out how abandoning the Christian values foundational to the EU has led to significant challenges, noting that numerous potential lives have been lost and that today’s youth lack the resources required for a thriving future.

The Pope further criticized policies framed as “family-friendly” that actually contribute to demographic decline, accusing them of fostering discrimination against motherhood and promoting abortion as a choice, while undermining the essence of starting and nurturing families.

In addressing the ongoing demographic hurdles and counterbalancing “excessive state intervention and individualism,” he highlighted the need to uplift the family unit, grounded in the union of a man and a woman.

“Only by revitalizing families can we counter the stark realities of winter in our aging population,” he concluded.
