Threat at Nebraska Christian High School Averted
Officials at a Christian high school in Nebraska successfully prevented a potential attack due to their swift actions, along with support from the Nebraska State Patrol. On June 26, the school, which caters to over 850 students, received a disturbing message targeting Scotus Central Catholic in Columbus.
Jeff Ornowtka, Executive Director of Columbus Catholic Schools, expressed the need to calm the intense political discourse that can lead to radical actions. Following the receipt of the threat, school officials immediately alerted both the Nebraska State Patrol and the Columbus Police Department.
The message was reported to contain threats directed not only at the school but also towards the family of Governor Jim Pillen. Governor Pillen, a Republican, and his wife, Suzanne, are parents to four children and grandparents to seven.
A 32-year-old Omaha man named Ean Halstead allegedly made the threats on the school’s Facebook page, claiming he would shoot up the school and target the governor’s family due to a joke that he found offensive.
Within hours, authorities connected an Omaha apartment complex to the IP address associated with the threatening post. When approached by officers outside his apartment on Bedford Street, Halstead allegedly refused to comply and barricaded himself inside.
Law enforcement, reinforced by a SWAT team, obtained search and arrest warrants. They were ultimately able to subdue Halstead with tranquilizers and take him into custody without further incident.
Initially, Halstead faced charges for interfering with law enforcement, but following further investigation and an examination of electronic devices seized during the search, he was re-arrested on July 17. He now faces charges related to terroristic threats and destruction of evidence.
As of now, Halstead is being held at the Douglas County Department of Corrections, with the investigation still ongoing.
Documents indicate Halstead has a previous record of violent behavior, including a protection order issued by an ex-girlfriend due to threats made against her and her pet.
Dave Lopez, Chief of Staff to Governor Pillen, expressed gratitude towards the Nebraska State Patrol and its partners for their prompt actions that ensured the safety of the governor’s family.
Lopez emphasized Nebraska’s firm stance against political violence, stating that threats against public officials or their families will be taken seriously and addressed appropriately. He echoed a sentiment for moderation in political discourse to mitigate escalating tensions that may lead to violence.
In light of recent violent incidents, including a tragic shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis last year, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgency for vigilance and accountability in safeguarding communities.
