Pregnancy is not limited to women, says a leading medical school chancellor.

Controversial Testimony on Pregnancy

Yes, the headline is accurate.

Sam Hawgood, the chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, stated during a recent House Education and Labor Committee session that individuals who are not women can indeed become pregnant.

“It’s baffling; this testimony is hard to comprehend.”

Throughout the hearing, entitled “Training Activists, Not Doctors: The Impact of DEI on Medical Schools,” Republican lawmakers challenged representatives from UCLA, UC San Francisco, and the University of Illinois regarding what they termed “woke ideology” affecting medical schools. They contended that initiatives focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) influence admissions, hiring practices, curricula, and the response to anti-Semitism on campuses.

Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) took issue with UCSF’s Gender and Sex Conceptual Framework in Education, which advises against using the phrase “pregnant women,” suggesting “pregnant people” instead. When Miller pressed Hawgood on the distinction, he defended the framework as essential for training medical students to handle diverse patient backgrounds, noting, “Sure, the majority of pregnancies are among women, and I’m fine with the term pregnant women.”

To which Miller responded with a pointed question: “Have non-biological women ever given birth to children?”

Hawgood replied, “So will transgender people.”

This exchange quickly gained traction on social media, drawing the attention of prominent conservative figures.

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remarked, “This is just one of many cases showing how ideologies taint science and medicine.” He posted his response to the incident online.

Meanwhile, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman simply described the situation as “crazy.”

Steve Guest, a former communications advisor to Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), remarked, “This is just the beginning; the academic world seems oblivious to the absurdity of it all.”

In a follow-up discussion, Sean Hannity of FOX News highlighted a moment during a subsequent exchange where UCLA’s Dean of Medicine, Stephen Dubinette, declined to answer the direct question, “Are there people who have uteruses but are not women?”

In response, Miller pointed out, “Here’s a simple fact for Dr. Steve Dubinette: People with uteruses are women.”

Hawgood has yet to address any inquiries regarding the matter from Blaze News.
