Capital Pride Parade Disrupted by Pro-Palestinian Activists

On Sunday, Ottawa’s annual Pride Parade was interrupted by a group of Pro-Palestinian activists known as Queers for Palestine (Q4P). They urged the Pride organizers to boycott Israel and expressed solidarity with “all oppressed people, including the Palestinians.”

According to reports, the situation between the two left-leaning groups became quite complicated, with it often being unclear who was chanting which slogans. It seemed like Capital Pride was attempting to dominate the event, while Q4P was angry over being told to suppress anti-Semitism as a condition for participating in the parade.

Q4P voiced their frustration on social media, claiming that there were demands for significant backing from the Grand Marshall’s support when the invitation was extended.

The Ottawa Mayor, Mark Sutcliffe, also found himself at the center of the controversy due to a previous boycott of the Pride March, which he said was in response to what he viewed as a pro-Palestinian stance.

On Monday, Sutcliffe made it clear that he wouldn’t apologize for his past actions concerning the Pride Parade. He emphasized that he wouldn’t allow the event to proceed without addressing several conditions put forth by Q4P. His refusal to engage with the parade in March 2024 prompted a statement from Capital Pride, which condemned the violent acts that had occurred on October 7, 2023, as well as the extensive military response by Israel in Gaza.

Sutcliffe advocated for Ottawa to remain a welcoming space for all, stating a desire to collaborate for a better city. He seemed to overlook the notion that those who may support or defend the atrocities from October 7 may not necessarily contribute to a welcoming atmosphere.

Capital Pride officially ended the event around 3 PM on Sunday when they were unable to move forward due to Q4P blocking the route. They noted that they had previously met with the festival organizers over the summer, emphasizing they should have understood the expectations for the day.

After more than an hour of attempts to resolve the situation, Capital Pride concluded that Q4P was not interested in a genuine dialogue and was misrepresenting their position.

The decision to cancel the parade was not taken lightly, and Capital Pride acknowledged the impact this would have on over 7,000 participants from more than 175 groups. They reiterated their support for the Palestinian cause but had retracted a contentious 2024 statement from their website, a move Q4P demanded be reinstated.

Following the uproar, Q4P accused Mayor Sutcliffe of aligning with right-wing business interests while trying to silence criticism toward Israel. Meanwhile, the Jewish Federation in Ottawa expressed disappointment with Q4P, labeling them as extremists who overshadowed what should have been a joyful celebration.

The Jewish Federation remarked that Q4P had hijacked an event celebrating love and diversity, stating that the Ottawa community deserved better than having their joy stolen by divisive voices.
