Pritzker responds to Trump’s National Guard warning: 'Stay away from Chicago'

Illinois Governor Warns Against National Guard Deployment

Last week, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed concerns to President Trump regarding potential National Guard troop deployments to Chicago. This follows Trump’s suggestion that he might target a Democratic-run city next.

During a press conference on Monday, surrounded by local and state Democratic leaders, Pritzker recounted an incident in the Oval Office. He mentioned that Trump, while speaking to the cameras, urged, “Mr. President, can we have the honor of protecting our city?’” Pritzker countered, saying, “President, don’t come to Chicago. You’re not welcome here, and we don’t need your presence.”

Trump has been contemplating sending troops to major cities like Chicago as part of an initiative to tackle crime in Democratic areas across the nation. Armed National Guard members have been patrolling Washington, D.C., since early this month, with the White House frequently providing updates on the outcomes of these actions, including arrests and property seizures.

A report from the Washington Post indicated that the Pentagon has been preparing for a possible military deployment to Chicago for several weeks, with plans that could involve thousands of National Guard members being dispatched to patrol the city as early as September.

Pritzker condemned the move, labeling it as a significant overreach that the country’s founders warned against. He asserted, “What President Trump is doing is unprecedented and unjust. It’s illegal, unconstitutional, and fundamentally un-American.”

The Illinois governor, who is also a candidate for the 2028 presidential election, mentioned that no one from the Trump administration had reached out to state officials for coordination regarding this law enforcement strategy.

He raised an important question, asking, “If this really concerns fighting crime and ensuring public safety, what justification does the White House have for these exceptional actions without any dialogue or consultation with the governor, the mayor, or the police?”

Pritzker further remarked, “Let me answer that: This isn’t about fighting crime. This is about Donald Trump seeking a pretext to deploy his troops in cities controlled by Democrats to intimidate political opponents.”
