Carmelo Anthony Sentenced to 35 Years for Murder of Austin Metcalf

Carmelo Anthony has received a 35-year prison sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder for the stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Texas. Following the conviction, Jeff Metcalf provided a moving victim impact statement. Outside the McKinney courthouse, protests alleging racial bias have been ongoing, while former U.S. Attorney Callie Stimson discussed potential grounds for appeal, including the “Batson argument” related to jury selection.

A professor from Howard University, Stacey Patton, publicly criticized Jeff Metcalf’s impact statement, suggesting that the tragedy began long before the knife was introduced by Anthony. Patton wrote an opinion piece arguing that the father’s parenting was partially to blame for the circumstances leading to his son’s death.

In her article, published shortly after the sentencing, Patton argued that Metcalf had not been sufficiently taught that black boys have boundaries. She stated, “You failed to teach him humility and self-control,” emphasizing that the underlying issues went beyond the immediate incident.

The case, which occurred in April 2025, when Anthony, now 19, stabbed Metcalf during a confrontation at a high school track meet, has sparked a broader national discussion about race. Supporters of Anthony argue that he was treated unfairly due to his race, while critics dismiss attempts to racialize the incident involving Metcalf, who was white.

Patton continued her critique by asserting that Jeff Metcalf’s comments reflected a perspective steeped in exclusion. “When he says, ‘You don’t belong in this community,’ it’s not just a father’s sorrow; it’s a proclamation of belonging,” she wrote. Patton accused him of using language that implies control over who is part of the community, linking it to historical racial dynamics.

She also mentioned that Jeff’s statements indicate a larger societal issue, suggesting that they stem from centuries of racial messaging. This incident, she claims, has created two grieving families, hinting that both sides are suffering from the consequences.

In a statement addressing her opinion piece, Patton described it as a “critique of racial power,” asserting it was not an attack on Jeff Metcalf or an endorsement of violence. She maintained that it is essential to recognize the humanity of all involved, including black children.

Meanwhile, commentary around the trial continues to raise questions about potential racial implications. Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett posed whether Anthony received a fair trial, suggesting that the jury’s composition could have impacted their impartiality. She noted the everyday fear and pain faced by black mothers, contrasting it with the experiences of the Metcalfe family.
