Protests at Minnesota Church Spark Controversy
Nekima Levy Armstrong, one of the organizers of a recent protest, spoke out on CNN regarding an incident where her group was accused of attempting to “storm” a church in Minnesota to protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Despite earlier statements implying a more aggressive approach, she now firmly denies any such intent.
During an appearance on “Erin Burnett Outfront,” Armstrong was questioned about whether the Justice Department had reached out to her after they threatened a crackdown on protesters. She expressed that, despite significant media coverage, she had not received any such communication and sought to clarify the nature of the protests.
Clarifying the Approach
Armstrong emphasized that their tactics did not involve rushing into the church. She described their participation in the service itself, stating that, after the pastor’s prayer, she raised a question about Pastor David Easterwood’s dual role as an ICE director and a church leader. In response, the pastor reportedly reacted defensively, prompting Armstrong to lead chants calling for justice.
According to Armstrong, her group had plans to “disrupt normal operations” beforehand, which contradicts her claims of a peaceful intent during the protest.
Response to Criticism
While Armstrong maintains that they did not “storm” the church, her prior comments indicate a more confrontational stance. She referred to their actions as “Operation Pull-Up,” a strategy to catch authorities off guard and disrupt operations subtly. Armstrong critiqued the church leadership for harboring someone connected to harmful actions in the community.
Before the church services were suspended, there had already been scrutiny over Armstrong’s views, especially concerning her involvement in boycotting a major retailer for scaling back diversity initiatives.
In the midst of these tensions, the pastor of the church publicly criticized the disruption, asserting their primary goal was to worship.
Armstrong, who leads a civil rights nonprofit and has raised significant funds for anti-poverty efforts, continues to drive her message and engage in activism around these issues. Overall, the situation reflects the complexities and conflicts involved when activism meets community spaces.
