Shooting During ICE Operation in Maine Sparks Protests

A tragic incident unfolded in Maine when an immigrant was fatally shot during an operation conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Lawmakers have confirmed the victim, a 26-year-old from Colombia, but the specifics of the situation—including the victim’s legal status—are still being investigated.

The Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition shared that the individual had been issued a Social Security card and was authorized to work in the U.S. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victim was removed from a car and subsequently shot. A witness reported hearing gunfire as ICE agents surrounded a white sedan with drawn weapons early Monday morning.

“He was in a car, he was pulled out of the car, the term the secretary used was ‘weaponized’ the car – and he was shot dead,” said one observer.

Maine Governor Janet Mills addressed the public’s concern regarding the incident, stating it was “alarming and frightening.” A nearby eyewitness described how officers jumped from an unmarked vehicle and swiftly approached the sedan, leading to the shooting.

Senator Angus King mentioned that he was informed about the situation by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who indicated there was a deportation order and warrant out for the man. King emphasized the need for a thorough investigation but noted the absence of body cameras during the alarming event.

A press release from Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey stated that preliminary findings suggest the victim was shot while trying to flee in a vehicle amid enforcement actions related to a removal order.

Following the shooting, protests erupted in the area, with activists chanting demands for accountability and justice. Demonstrators also visited the office of Senator Susan Collins, expressing their outrage and frustration over the ICE operation.
