Enhancing Homeland Security in Puerto Rico

The beautiful sandy beaches of Puerto Rico, known for their vibrant blue waters and palm trees, are not just picturesque but also a focal point for security discussions. Rebecca Gonza Lezramos, a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, recently shared insights into the impact of new regulations on operations in the region.

According to Gonza Lezramos, the approval of significant funding has created new opportunities for HSI. “We’ve seen a notable decline in smuggling activities since President Trump took office. The resources we now have will help us tackle staffing shortages through various recruitment efforts,” she explained.

Gonza Lezramos highlighted that their work goes beyond just immigration enforcement. “We also investigate major organizations involved in drug trafficking, human smuggling, and money laundering,” she stated. Notably, she has made history as the first Puerto Rican woman to be appointed as a leading agent for HSI.

The strategic location of Puerto Rico, close to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, makes it an attractive target for smugglers, especially with increased security measures in place at the US-Mexico border. “Once you reach Puerto Rico, you’re effectively on US soil, and moving from there is fairly straightforward. This accessibility makes the Caribbean route appealing for many,” she noted.

After the enactment of the significant funding bill, HSI’s operations have been bolstered. Gonza Lezramos remarked, “While the Mexican border is being tightly monitored, it has inadvertently opened up routes for both human and drug smuggling through the Caribbean.”

She pointed out a concerning trend: “There’s a notable presence of fentanyl on the island as Mexican organizations expand their operations beyond traditional routes.” Investigations have shown a consistent involvement of “foreign individuals” in these criminal enterprises.

“It’s essential to understand that not all foreigners are a threat. Still, we’ve seen many who pose serious risks to the US,” she stressed. The agent underlined that maintaining national security is crucial and requires vigilant control over who enters and leaves the country.

In closing, she emphasized, “Our primary mission is to protect the US, and that’s what we are committed to doing.”
