Putin and Modi Discuss Energy Cooperation Amid U.S. Pressure
On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting his commitment to providing “uninterrupted transportation of fuel” to India. This comes as U.S. President Donald Trump urges Modi to steer clear of Russian crude oil purchases.
This summit is significant as Trump is working to negotiate peace between Moscow and Ukraine while trying to persuade other nations to reduce their Russian oil imports, aiming to curtail the Kremlin’s ongoing war financing.
Following their meeting, Modi lauded the “deep and inseparable relationship” he shares with Putin, noting the signing of multiple agreements to bolster defense, trade, and energy collaboration.
Modi remarked, “Humanity has gone through many hardships, but the relationship between Russia and India has been like a north star.”
He had previously welcomed Putin to India, emphasizing the historical benefits of their friendship and expressing excitement for their discussions.
The economic partnership formed between the two nations extends until 2030 and aims to escalate annual trade by $100 billion.
Putin assured, “Russia is a reliable supplier of energy resources and everything necessary for the development of India’s energy sector,” reiterating their readiness to support India’s growing economy with a steady fuel supply.
It’s worth noting that Trump has increased tariffs on Indian exports to 50% due to India’s perseverance in buying Russian oil, despite global calls for reduced fuel purchases from Russia.
This meeting reflects Modi’s apparent intent to push back against Trump’s wishes, even with potentially adverse economic ramifications from U.S. tariffs.
India, now the second-largest buyer of Russian crude after China, also benefits from military agreements with Russia. There was a significant agreement in February to enhance military cooperation, which includes joint exercises and logistical support.
Despite previous deliveries of Russian S-400 missile systems, additional shipments have faced delays, further complicated by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Experts like Praveen Donti, a senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, indicate that this interaction showcases India’s diplomatic balancing act between Western alliances and ties with Russia.
“The big change now is the desire to be a strategic partner with the United States at the same time, and this will be a diplomatic challenge,” he mentioned.
