Quiet from Climate Doomsayers as Debated Study Suggests Potential New Ice Age

New Study Indicates a Potential New Ice Age Due to Atlantic Currents

Forget about fears of a “global boil.” According to climate scientists in a new study, significant changes in major Atlantic Ocean currents could actually lead to a new ice age, along with shifts in sea levels. This controversial finding was reported by various news outlets.

The research, published in Communication Earth and Environment, seems to contradict the prevalent narrative of “global boiling” that dominates discussions around climate change.

This alarming prediction comes from a collaboration between the Institute of Oceanography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of California, San Diego.

Interestingly, the publication of this study coincided with comments from Bill Gates, who downplayed temperature changes’ impact on the planet, urging people to consider other, more immediate threats.

The findings indicate that the Gulf Stream, a key component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is under stress. This ocean current plays a vital role in transporting warm water from tropical regions to the northern hemisphere, contributing to milder climates in places like Europe and the U.S. East Coast.

As temperatures rise, the Greenland ice sheet is melting, and this meltwater is flowing into the North Atlantic Ocean, leading to stagnation in the currents.

The study has unveiled a “unique thermal fingerprint” between about 3,280 and 6,560 feet below the ocean’s surface, which indicates variations in AMOC. The researchers noted that this distinct temperature pattern could serve as an important measure for monitoring these ocean currents in a warming environment.

According to the researchers, current ocean trends suggest that we might be facing prolonged economic challenges, possibly extending into the coming decades, and there could be a complete decline by the century’s end.

Iceland has recognized the potential collapse of AMOC as an existential threat. The country’s Climate Minister, Johan Paul Johansson, has stated that this is a direct danger to national security.

If AMOC were to fully collapse, much of Europe could experience severe cold, with temperatures in parts of the UK potentially plummeting to -30°C.

Traditionally, the narrative surrounding climate change has largely focused on rising temperatures, with warnings of a new ice age becoming increasingly rare. Just this year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres suggested that the era of global warming had ended, replaced by “global boiling.” He painted a stark picture, describing horrific scenes of natural disasters and climate-related tragedies.

Guterres has characterized the situation as one of climate chaos, emphasizing humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels and the urgent need for a coordinated response to avert disaster.
