The Catholic Church in Queens was engulfed in flames within 24 hours of worshippers gathering at Easter Sunday Mass.
The fire broke out at St. Edmund’s Church in the Holy Trinity Diocese on 204-25 Rockaway Point Boulevard. According to FDNY, it’s just before 2pm on Saturday.
In total, 33 units and 138 fires and EMS officials appeared to have ripped the first and second floors of the squat building, smashing part of the church roof and breaking windows.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the flames, and one was taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The other refused medical attention, according to the department.
According to FDNY, there were no other injuries and the fire was in control at 3:40pm.
Founded in 1937, the historic church was scheduled to hold a service at 10:30am on Sunday, according to the blessed Trinity Catholic Diocese website.
The parish did not immediately respond to inquiries.
The firefighters were investigating the cause.
