Recent Research Shows 60% of Americans Rely on Christian Media for Hope

The State of Christian Media

A recent study called “The State of Christian Media” revealed that around 60% of Americans engage with Christian media in some capacity, with younger individuals leading the charge. This research utilized a nationally representative sample of over 2,000 adults in the U.S. and was a collaboration between the Barna Group and a national religious broadcaster.

“In this investigation, we specifically asked participants about their use of Christian media outside of church settings,” noted Troy Miller, the CEO and president of the National Religious Broadcasting Agency. “It was essential for us not to mix this with church activities.”

The findings showed that various forms of Christian media—like television, radio, podcasts, and social media—are quite popular, with a significant number of people consuming this content.

“I mean, I expected a decent number, but 60% is really impressive,” Miller commented. “It’s exciting!”

Miller also emphasized that this data carries an important lesson. There’s value in engaging with Bible-based media outlets.

“I believe Christian media is drawing attention,” he said. “People are clearly seeking something and paying attention to what’s happening around them.” And, when asked why they turn to Christian media, responses often included a search for encouragement and hope.

A press release highlighted that Christian media consumers tend to skew younger compared to non-consumers. Social media is noted as a dominant channel in this realm, facilitating a variety of Christian media platforms. Interestingly, 64% of Gen Z and 58% of millennials are active on Christian social media accounts.

Miller pointed out that these results indicate that younger audiences primarily prefer digital platforms, which have typically catered more to older generations. “It’s fascinating that two of the youngest demographics in America—Gen Z and millennials—are heavily engaged in Christian media,” he remarked.

“This really illustrates a quest for fulfillment among these groups.”

Moreover, Miller noted that 66% of Americans perceive Christian media as both valuable and trustworthy.
