In California, gas prices are skyrocketing thanks to refinery fires that suffocate supply, send average prices to $5 per gallon, and have even higher in the state's northern regions.
KTLA-5 in Los Angeles It has been reported:
The average price of gas in California has skyrocketed over the last few weeks, flirting with the scary $5 mark.
According to the AAA, the average price for regular gas in California was $4.84 on Saturday. That number rose about 25 cents since last Saturday, and 44 cents from a month ago.
The month's 44 cent rise comes as refineries begin to move towards summer blends of fuel, AAA said. Another cause is to make daily satisfaction with major refineries offline in Northern California [sic].
San Francisco Chronicle It has been reported:
The price surge was due to a fire that broke out at the Martinez PBF refinery on February 1, which forces the state's gasoline supply to be significantly disrupted indefinitely.
…
The national average for regular gasoline in gallons is $3.17, about $1.65 less than the California average, which is the highest in the country.
California regularly experiences price shocks due to laws and regulations that limit the production of fossil fuels and the fuel blends that refineries may produce. This means it is difficult to compensate for the shortage by importing fuel from other states.
