Senate Republicans Propose Funding Cuts for Anarchist Jurisdictions
Senate Republicans are looking to cut federal funding for what they call “anarchist jurisdictions,” particularly in response to recent anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles. Senator Tim Sheehee from Montana is set to introduce a bill that would impact cities opposing President Trump’s immigration policies, potentially risking their federal funds.
The proposed legislation aims to direct Attorney General Pam Bondi to compile a list of these jurisdictions. Being named on that list could jeopardize federal funding for those cities.
According to the bill, the Administration’s Office of Management and Budget would guide federal agencies to limit funding eligibility for those areas, emphasizing that taxpayer dollars should go to communities that uphold the law and prioritize public safety. Sheehee pointed out that many local governments, from both sides of the aisle, are allowing violent offenders to disrupt lives without facing consequences.
Following the riots, Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass publicly criticized the Trump administration’s deportation efforts. In light of this unrest, Trump’s administration filed a lawsuit against the city, arguing its local policies hinder federal immigration enforcement.
Representative Tony Wied from Wisconsin recently expressed gratitude towards Sheehee, asserting that it’s crucial for elected officials to restore order in their communities or risk losing federal support.
This legislation appears to build on Trump’s past assertions to withhold funds from cities that he deemed to have become lawless after incidents such as George Floyd’s death. Back then, his administration sought to categorize jurisdictions that permitted violence and disorder, threatening to restrict federal aid to them.
As this situation evolves, it highlights ongoing tensions between federal immigration policies and local governance, especially in cities that embrace sanctuary policies.
