Initial polling in Maine's 2nd Congressional District suggests one of the key House races is shaping up to be favorable for Republicans.
Republican candidate Austin Theriault defeated Democratic Rep. Jared Golden 47% to 44%. According to According to a Pan Atlantic Research survey, 9% of respondents said they were undecided.
“Trump is leading Harris by 7 percentage points in this district.”
Golden is seen as a vulnerable candidate because former President Donald Trump won the district in 2016 and 2020, making it one of the few seats left up for grabs.
The Democratic candidate's weakness is even more surprising given that polls around the same time in the 2020 campaign showed him leading by as much as 20 percentage points.
Perhaps due to his precarious position in the district, Golden has not yet said whether he will vote for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, where Trump leads Harris by 7 percentage points.
Democrats have a name recognition advantage in the district, but Republicans could chip away at that advantage with an ad campaign.
Golden opposed gun control measures in Congress but said he apologized to voters and changed his mind in 2023. But it was unclear what specific measures he would support, and his office did not respond to attempts by The Blaze News to seek clarification.
Theriault, a state senator, support Revising the Second Amendment is a key part of his election strategy.
