Republican Attack Ad Targets Jon Ossoff Over ID Requirement

A new Republican attack advertisement is going after Georgia’s Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, claiming he requires attendees to show ID at his political rallies. The ad argues that demanding ID to vote is essentially a method of voter suppression.

The ad opens with the question, “Want to attend Jon Ossoff’s rally?” It then shifts to a clip featuring Ossoff’s staff at a rally held on February 7, asking for ID from attendees.

“Don’t forget your ID,” one staff member is heard saying as people arrive at the Georgia International Convention Center, located in metro Atlanta.

Further in the video, another official questions a participant about their ID, repeating phrases like, “Please have your ID ready. Thank you.”

In response, Ossoff labeled the push for stricter photo ID requirements in voting and registration as “totally partisan, completely unworkable, [and] malice.”

His team chose not to offer comments regarding the advertisement.

On Wednesday, House Republicans passed an updated version of the Voter Integrity Act. This new legislation seeks to enhance in-person documentation requirements, including the mandate for photo ID. It’s considered a stricter version of a previous bill from 2025, which mainly tackled voter registration rather than the voting process itself.

Interestingly, only one House Democrat voted in support of the voter ID measure and proof of citizenship in US elections.

Before the vote, Ossoff faced critiques from one of his Republican challengers in the upcoming Senate race, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.). Carter labeled Ossoff a “one-timer,” asserting that voter ID is “correct and appropriate,” but now he’s accusing Ossoff of supporting what his party deems “voter suppression.”

“The law hasn’t changed. Public opinion hasn’t changed. What has changed is that he and other Democratic politicians like him have realized that illegal immigrants can no longer vote to sustain Democrats in office,” Carter claimed. “They oppose this bill because it will chip away at their voting base, plain and simple.”

Despite his previous opposition to the Voter Integrity Act, Ossoff did campaign on the need for photo ID, framing it as necessary for security. A campaign event confirmation email informed attendees, “Due to security requirements… please be prepared to present identification that matches your RSVP list and arrival instructions (printed or mobile).”
