Rep. Richie Torres Talks Grocery Store Proposal on CBS News
During a recent episode of CBS News “Takeout,” Rep. Richie Torres (D-NY) discussed the grocery store proposal from New York City candidate Zohran Mamdani (D), expressing confidence that New York can support a publicly run grocery store.
Host Garrett, who is also the Chief Washington correspondent for CBS News, questioned Torres, asking if he supports Mamdani and whether he sees his approach as part of the current trend towards more radical progressive politics.
Torres acknowledged Mamdani as a Democratic candidate with a strong chance of becoming the next mayor of New York, affirming his commitment to building a relationship with him.
Garrett also queried Torres about Mamdani’s stance against immigration enforcement, asking how Torres would react if Mamdani were elected.
In response, Torres expressed general agreement, indicating that immigrants who have been long-standing community members and are not violating laws should be shielded from deportation.
Garrett followed up by asking about rent stabilization and the implications of city-run grocery stores. Torres remarked that while he supports tenant relief, he needs to ensure that properties can generate enough rental income to maintain their upkeep.
He concluded by saying that he would not oppose Mamdani’s initiative for a city-run grocery store, feeling that the public response to the idea was somewhat exaggerated.
