Concerns Over Chinese Influence in U.S. Elections

National security experts have raised alarms about potential threats stemming from the Chinese Communist Party following the release of declassified intelligence by President Donald Trump’s administration regarding perceived Chinese interference in U.S. elections.

During a prime-time address from the White House, President Trump discussed a range of declassified documents. He pointed out China’s attempts to sway U.S. elections, issues related to U.S. voter data, vulnerabilities in electronic voting systems, and specific mismanagement of a Michigan voter registration survey. Additionally, a Homeland Security investigation reportedly found hundreds of thousands of non-citizens registered to vote in federal elections.

Michael Rucci, founder and CEO of State Armor, commented that China’s actions in the 2020 election indicate the Chinese Communist Party’s extensive involvement, not only in politics but across critical industries, universities, and technology sectors. “They’ve even leveraged financial power to turn American journalists and businesses against the president,” he noted. Rucci emphasized the importance of securing elections, safeguarding vital infrastructure, and ensuring government agencies can defend American interests against foreign interference.

Mike Martin, a former senior national security official, remarked that Trump’s address reminded Americans of the need to prioritize election integrity. He commended the president and Secretary Ratcliffe for shedding light on these issues and warned that Communist China poses significant risks to the nation’s security and prosperity. Martin emphasized that the influence of the Chinese Communist Party—or any foreign entity—on U.S. elections should never be tolerated.

Cale Brown, who held positions in the State Department during Trump’s presidency, stated that Trump’s leadership has played a critical role in fostering bipartisan awareness of the threat posed by China. He noted that the newly revealed information about China’s electoral influence should spur action to counter these threats, acknowledging that any complacency would work against both American and global interests.

The administration has communicated with states about compromised election data, promising collaboration to address any technical vulnerabilities prior to the upcoming midterm elections. According to declassified documents, China has allegedly compromised voter records of more than 200 million Americans and has impacted the voter rolls in at least 18 states.

A further declassified CIA memo indicated that in 2019, China sought to manipulate American business leaders against Trump through contracts with major companies. The Chinese government’s efforts ostensibly aimed to diminish Trump’s support and prevent his re-election, while also attempting to gain access to U.S. voter data and identify weaknesses in electoral infrastructure that could be exploited by adversaries. Notably, the documents suggested that some members of the U.S. intelligence community may have suppressed relevant information regarding Chinese activities.

China has rejected claims of any interference in the U.S. electoral process, insisting it never meddled in presidential elections and accusing the United States of spreading misinformation.

Rucci’s remarks come in light of recent allegations against State Armor, as the Environmental Law Institute has accused the organization of maintaining ties with entities linked to the Chinese government, thereby allegedly undermining U.S. energy production. Consequently, calls for a congressional investigation into State Armor’s partnerships and funding have surfaced. Additionally, a congressional committee is looking into whether foreign interests are opposing U.S. data centers, citing instances of foreign funding and propaganda promoting opposition to the construction of those centers.
