Romania establishes military bases for US defense initiatives during Iran tensions

Iran responds with a warning following Trump's announcement of a 'humanitarian gesture' in the Strait of Hormuz and other major news stories.

Romania’s Response to Middle East Tensions

Romania’s Foreign Minister has stated that Bucharest is stepping up to support the Trump administration’s call for assistance to allies in the Middle East, specifically by permitting the use of its military bases for defensive purposes amid ongoing tensions with Iran and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

In an exclusive interview at the United Nations, Interim Foreign Minister Oana Silvia Zoiu mentioned, “We’ve allowed access for defense operations like aerial refueling because we think it’s vital that allies can rely on one another.” She clarified, “We are not in a war, nor do we plan to be, but we’re part of a collective defense effort and the diplomatic work to reopen this critical shipping route.”

Zoiu’s remarks come as President Trump continuously urges European allies to boost their defense spending and take a wider role in global security, particularly in maritime security in the Middle East.

While acknowledging existing tensions between the U.S. and some European nations regarding aid related to the Iran conflict, Zoiu expressed confidence that both sides recognize the need for improved cooperation. “I’m convinced that both the American and European parties understand the importance of enhancing our dialogue to avoid any friction in our transatlantic partnership,” she noted. “Better communication will ultimately lead to better outcomes, especially concerning requests for help with Middle Eastern conflicts.”

Romania has now approved the use of its military bases for operations that aim to bolster regional security. Zoiu emphasized that trust is key: “We’ve passed a proposal through our Parliament, supported by the President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the Prime Minister to utilize our military infrastructure for defense activities, such as refueling aircraft.”

She added, “I think we still share clear objectives in Europe and with countries globally, including reducing energy prices and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of essential supplies like fertilizers.”

Romania, a NATO member that shares a border with Ukraine, has become a crucial part of the alliance amid rising concerns about the conflict in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East. Zoiu voiced agreement with President Trump regarding the necessity of increased defense budgets, noting that Romania has ramped up its military spending to 2% of its GDP during Trump’s presidency and plans to average 3.4% next year for military procurement and strategic investments.

Her statements followed Romania’s call for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting to address a Russian drone strike that recently damaged residential buildings in Galați, Romania. This marked a historic first for Romania, as it was the first time a Security Council meeting request based on a direct threat to national security was made.

Within this context, Zoiu informed the Security Council that the drone, which was loaded with explosives, breached Romanian airspace for about four minutes before crashing into a residential building, injuring a mother and her child. “Our military analysis indicates it was a Russian-made drone, identified by its design and equipment,” she explained.

Highlighting her concerns, Zoiu declared that this incident exemplifies a broader issue facing the international community about how a permanent member of the Security Council can simultaneously act as an aggressor.

In summary, Romania is not only solidifying its defense alliances but also taking a stand to engage the international community on issues directly affecting its national security. Zoiu emphasized collaboration with the U.S. and allies in condemning such aggressive actions while working toward shared goals in the region.
