U.S. Progress in Ukraine Peace Talks
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced advancements in discussions with Ukrainian representatives regarding a 28-point peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This meeting took place in Geneva, where various officials from Ukraine, Europe, and Canada were also present.
During his remarks, Rubio expressed optimism about the discussions, calling them “perhaps the best we’ve had since we took office.” He mentioned plans for further dialogue later in the day and emphasized that any agreement would ultimately require approval from the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents, along with consent from Russia.
The proposal, which has elicited significant concessions from Ukraine, includes territorial compromises, a reduction in military forces, and a promise to forego NATO ambitions in exchange for security guarantees and an end to hostilities.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, described the meeting as “very productive,” highlighting optimism for a just and lasting peace. Yermak expressed gratitude toward the United States for its commitment to resolving the conflict.
As discussions continued, President Trump criticized Ukrainian leaders for showing “zero gratitude” for American efforts in pursuing peace. In reaction, Zelensky reaffirmed his appreciation, insisting that the core issue remains Russia’s initiation of the war.
He acknowledged the vital support from the U.S. and reiterated Ukraine’s focus on ending Russia’s aggression. Zelensky stated, “We are grateful for everything that America and President Trump are doing for security, and we remain constructive.”
