Russian Disinformation Fueling Border Deal Opposition

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) has suggested that opponents of a border compromise that could allow in more than 5,000 migrants per day are being manipulated by Russian influence.

Rounds parroted similar talking points about Russian influence in Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign, citing Russian disinformation about the border and the broader deal, including aid to Ukraine. seems to suggest that this is the cause of opposition to the agreement, which has yet to be seen.

round Said Wednesday, “Many things are; Rumors on the Internet often come from abroad, and some people don’t want to give money to Ukraine, so they want this government to be shut down. ”

A group of Senate negotiators has been working for months on a compromise that combines border security measures with tens of millions of dollars in foreign aid, primarily for Ukraine. As draft details about the border part of the deal leak out, the bill’s prospects look increasingly bleak.

Senators quickly criticized deal skeptics, repeatedly insisting that the leaked details were not actually included. But, paradoxically, they seem unwilling or unable to provide information on the actual content of the bill.

The lead Republican negotiator, Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), also blamed the bill’s unpopularity on “internet rumors,” but said the bill was generally unpopular with the Republican base. He provided few details other than increasing funding for the policy. Increased funding for immigrant admissions and inclusion policies.

Amid speculation that the bill’s release is imminent, the Senate is on recess until reconvening on Monday, one day earlier than previously scheduled.
