A 23-year-old Salvadoran illegal immigrant who was apprehended at the southern border and released has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend in June.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed to Fox News Digital that Gerber Ruiz Sanchez Centeno was in the U.S. illegally and had been detained previously.
“Sanchez Centeno is a 23-year-old Salvadoran national who is in the U.S. illegally,” ICE said in a statement. “U.S. Border Patrol arrested Sanchez on June 2, when he illegally entered the U.S. near Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Later that day, ERO El Paso assigned Sanchez to a GPS-monitored Alternative to Detention program. ERO El Paso released Sanchez from ATD on August 8 after he absconded from the program.”
“Montgomery County Police arrested Sanchez on September 20th and charged him with the murder of his girlfriend. Sanchez remains in the custody of Montgomery County, Maryland authorities. ERO Baltimore filed an immigration detention order against Sanchez with the Montgomery County Detention Center on September 23rd, 2024,” the statement continued.

Maryland State Police confirmed that the immigrant was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of his arrest. Authorities identified the girlfriend as 18-year-old Dania Carolina Cruz Mejia, also an immigrant from El Salvador.

Cruz Mejia's brother discovered his sister's body and contacted Centeno, who expressed remorse and said he would turn himself in.

Centeno's arrest comes amid a wave of similar incidents across the country, including one in which Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested four people in a 48-hour period on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket earlier this month, accused of child sex crimes.
