San Jose Sharks Issue Apology Over Controversial Jumbotron Message

The San Jose Sharks have issued an apology after a message displaying support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement appeared on the Jumbotron during their Hispanic Heritage Night event.

During the first intermission of a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the message proclaimed, “SJ Sharks fans love the ice!! GET’EM BOYZ!” which immediately ruffled feathers among attendees. Many in the crowd responded with boos, especially given that it was part of their ninth annual “Los Tiburones Night” celebration.

In light of the backlash, the Sharks offered an apology late in the game, explaining that the content had been sent by an outside individual who was not present, leading to its unintentional display on the scoreboard.

“An offensively worded message submitted by an outsider was mistakenly displayed inside the arena,” the team clarified in a statement posted later on social media. They emphasized that the incident did not reflect the organization’s values and expressed regret that their usual review processes failed to catch it before it went live.

While the apology was issued, dissatisfaction lingered among fans regarding the actual appearance of the message. One commentator remarked on social media, “Night at Los Tiburones, too. What a terrible face.” Others echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that screening procedures for such content need to be improved in the future.

A long-time supporter, Jessica Clark, expressed her dismay, saying she and her friends were “appalled” by the message. “They’re my favorite team and I have tattoos, but this was something I should have caught,” she said.

The Sharks, unfortunately, didn’t manage to shake off the incident during the match, ultimately losing to Pittsburgh 3-0.
