According to predictions from Decision Desk Headquarters, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) will advance to the general election in California’s closely watched Senate race.
Schiff was the top vote-getter in a competitive nonpartisan primary that also included fellow Democrats Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, as well as Republican baseball great Steve Garvey.
Under California’s nonpartisan system, the top two vote-getters advance to the November general election, regardless of party affiliation. Mr. Schiff’s allies had been working to promote Mr. Garvey, a Republican, in the hope that it would facilitate a red-blue matchup for the general office rather than a battle between Democrats.
Mr. Schiff started this year with about $35 million in the bank, including his work as the lead House impeachment manager during former President Trump’s first trial and on the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. He is well known nationwide for his activities. at the U.S. Capitol.
Candidates are vying for the seat vacated by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), currently being filled on an interim basis by appointee Sen. LaFonza Butler (D-Calif.) . Mr. Butler chose not to participate in the crowded primary to retain his full-term seat.
The four leading candidates are seeking partial terms in the Senate, with the aim of succeeding Butler for a short period of time before the next term begins in January 2025.
