School Shootings Are a ‘Fact of American Life’

Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) discussed the shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on CNN's “State of the Union” on Sunday, saying school shootings are “a fact of life in America.”

Host Dana Bash said, “Senator J.D. Vance is calling for more protections for schools. He's saying, 'I hate to acknowledge this. I hate to say this is a fact of life, but if you're a psychopath and you want to make headlines, you'd find that our schools are an easy target.' What's your response to that?”

“This is not just a fact of life, this is a fact of American life. We as Americans have to ask ourselves why things like this keep happening here. The least we can do is stop hiding, because we're literally teaching our kids that the best we can do when something like this happens is teach them how to hide. Think about the trauma we're inflicting on our kids,” Warnock said.

She added, “He talks about making our schools stronger and safer, but in reality the same thing is happening in spas, shopping malls, houses of worship, doctor's offices. What are we going to accomplish by fortifying the entire country? Just like we made people safer in their cars, let's enact common sense gun control laws. We can do the same with guns. This is not about who believes in the Second Amendment and who doesn't.”
