Maine Voters Speak on Graham Platner Controversy

Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, is currently facing backlash over a number of past actions. These include allegations of abuse from an ex-girlfriend and a tattoo that has drawn criticism. As Platner gears up for the primary against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, divisions among Maine voters are becoming more apparent. Support from Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna for Platner is also part of the conversation.

Interestingly, two prominent Democratic leaders, who initially hesitated to back Platner, slightly changed their tone after his primary victory. House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued a somewhat lukewarm statement supporting him amidst ongoing controversies.

They stated, “Over the past year, we have created a path for Democrats to gain a Senate majority and end the chaos and damage of the Trump administration by defeating the Republican Party that enabled President Trump’s harmful policies.” This statement was released shortly after Platner was announced as the winner of the primary.

In their statement, New York’s lawmakers took the opportunity to portray Senator Collins as a far-right ally of Trump, even though she has distanced herself from him on various occasions. The statement emphasized that Collins’ voting record aligns with Trump 96 percent of the time and criticized her for endorsing his judicial nominees.

Just days ago, Platner met with several Democratic figures, including Gillibrand and Schumer, in Washington, D.C., amid escalating scandals about his activities. Following this meeting, Gillibrand was noncommittal about her support for other progressive candidates but expressed confidence in Platner’s ability to win in Maine.

“Yes, I am convinced we will win in Maine,” she indicated to reporters.

Schumer, while trying to sidestep pointed questions from the media, reiterated his belief in defeating Collins to reclaim the Senate. He mentioned, “I talked with Graham Platner today. We’re going to defeat Susan Collins and take back the Senate.” After multiple inquiries about the meeting, he eventually confirmed his endorsement of Platner.

However, Platner previously attracted negative attention when news surfaced about his account on Kik, an anonymous messaging app that has faced scrutiny for not adequately preventing the sharing of illicit content. Notably, a profile picture Platner used on the platform was quite revealing, raising eyebrows.

Just days following his Washington visit, accusations emerged against him regarding aggressive behavior towards a former girlfriend, allegations he has denied. His past scandals range from indecent posts on social media to derogatory comments about a decorated veteran, and even a tattoo related to a Nazi symbol that has since been covered up, alongside reports of sending explicit messages during his marriage.
