Schumer and Pelosi face defeat while Trump achieves a significant victory in Washington

Schumer’s Government Shutdown Strategy Fails

Chuck Schumer’s attempt to manage the government shutdown fell apart when eight members, including seven Democrats and an independent, disagreed with him. This marks a significant and embarrassing end to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

This situation highlights one of President Trump’s notable victories against his staunch opponents, like Schumer and former House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Since his election in 2016, Trump has faced ongoing opposition, being stymied, criticized, and even impeached by figures such as Schumer and Pelosi.

Now, quite notably, Schumer has lost his position as Senate Minority Leader, while Pelosi appears to be preparing to leave Washington for good.

They both viewed themselves as key players in opposing Trump and, with help from various media outlets, sought to curtail his presidency and authority. Their attitude suggested they didn’t see him as a legitimate president.

Criticism and Confrontation

During Trump’s first term, Schumer prominently supported the unfounded “Russia, Russia, Russia” allegations. He famously warned Trump in 2017 about the repercussions of challenging U.S. intelligence agencies, stating, “You’re playing against the intelligence community, and they have six ways to fight back against you starting Sunday,” which carried a very ominous tone.

This concern soon proved ironic, as evidence emerged suggesting that the very intelligence services Schumer sought to protect had interfered in the 2016 election to aid Clinton. Schumer did not vocalize any opposition to the Biden administration’s aggressive pursuit of legal action against Trump.

Meanwhile, Pelosi is likely to become more vocal, potentially using the events of January 6 to push for Trump’s prosecution, aiming to prevent him from returning to the White House.

Fortunately for Trump, both Schumer and Pelosi’s ambitions have faltered as their lengthy period of influence unravels.

As the so-called “Schumer shutdown” concluded, Republicans called for Schumer’s replacement, bolstering Trump’s standing as a formidable political strategist.

Schumer himself remarked, “He thought he could defeat the Republicans, but the Republicans defeated him.” This perspective highlights his ongoing personal challenges, rather than external factors.

Both Schumer and Pelosi consistently underestimated Trump’s resilience, the loyalty of his supporters, and his dominance in Congress.

They seemed to believe that Trump’s persistent opposition would ultimately backfire for him. The shutdown was just another tactic from Trump and Republican allies to exert control, hoping that pressure would force concessions.

Traditionally, the media might have leaned towards blaming Republicans during such crises, making Democrats believe they could benefit with minimal risk.

Instead, Trump effectively unified Republican opposition to proposals aimed at expanding Obamacare subsidies.

Calculated Missteps

Ultimately, Republicans agreed only to conduct a vote on the issue next month, which many perceived as largely ineffective since no significant change was anticipated.

The lack of tangible outcomes led to anger among Democrats and calls for Schumer’s resignation. He had championed a government shutdown but gained nothing but widespread criticism for himself and his party.

His misguided calculations were so out of touch that even some media outlets did not rally to his side. It became evident that while Democrats pushed for healthcare support, Republicans were steadfast in their opposition.

In Schumer’s case, his strategy unraveled when he could no longer maintain party cohesion.

Continuing the shutdown in a period of internal disagreement among Democrats made no strategic sense, especially as Republicans remained firm in their stance.

Representative Ro Khanna, for example, publicly criticized Schumer, stating, “Mr. Schumer is no longer effective and should be removed,” highlighting frustrations within the party. He further asked, “If we can’t lead the fight to stop rising health care costs for Americans, what are we going to fight for?”

Progressive groups joined in the outcry against Schumer, though Bernie Sanders referred to the outcome as a “disaster” without placing blame squarely on Schumer.

A Time of Decline

Extending the shutdown would have been illogical, given the Republican Party’s unity. The 42-day shutdown, the longest ever, caused significant hardship for millions of Americans.

Over one million government employees were furloughed without pay, leading to delays in food assistance for struggling families and chaos at airports due to a lack of air traffic controllers.

While Schumer’s downfall made headlines, Pelosi quietly announced she would not run for re-election and prepared to leave Congress, having amassed considerable wealth through questionable stock trades.

As Schumer faces a challenging future, he is left isolated, straddling lines between parties if not fully embraced by either.

However, there may still be opportunities for Schumer to emerge as a significant voice in New York politics. Notably, he was the only local Democratic leader not to back the city’s upcoming mayoral candidate, Zoran Mamdani, reflecting more moderate positions he once held.

At 75 years old and with three years to go in his term, there’s potential for Schumer to advocate for prudent policies in New York as he transitions towards the end of his lengthy career.
