The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a request by the Missouri Attorney General to stay the sentence and lift censorship restrictions imposed on former President Donald Trump in connection with his so-called hush money trial in New York state.
In early July, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican appointee currently seeking an unfulfilled term, effectively sued the state of New York, alleging that the state attempted to prevent Missourians from hearing anything the 2024 Republican presidential candidate said, citing a gag order that remained in effect even after a New York jury convicted Trump on all 34 charges related to payments made to cover up his alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels from the tabloids in 2016.
“I will continue my lawsuit against @KamalaHarris @JoeBiden’s Department of Justice for orchestrating the unlawful prosecution of President Trump.”
“New York is trying to hijack our national election and put President Trump in jail,” Bailey said. Tweeted “Missouris want to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Acting Judge Juan Merchan relaxed the gag order after Trump was convicted, allowing him to criticize jurors and witnesses in the case, but he is still barred from speaking about prosecutors or their families.
Last week, a New York appeals court denied a motion by Trump, who was recently shot and nearly killed in an assassination attempt, to lift the remaining restrictions, citing ongoing claims that DA staff were receiving “intimidation” after the jury verdict continued. There have been no reports of physical harm to court staff as a result of the trial.
