Interior Secretary’s Views on Energy Transition
During an event with Breitbart News on Monday, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum expressed skepticism about shifting away from traditional energy sources, labeling this transition as an “illusion.” According to him, alternative energy isn’t as reliable, dependable, or affordable as it’s often portrayed.
Burgum acknowledged the global move toward greener energy, attributing it to various factors necessitating new sources of energy. Yet, he emphasized that this shift is somewhat of a fantasy, if not a complete falsehood.
He stated, “When we talk about transition, we’re discussing a switch from one energy form to another. But this has been more of an illusion, something quite powerful, perhaps even deceptive. We fundamentally need energy that is affordable, reliable, and safe. If the goal is to transition to energy that is variable, subject to weather, and often sourced from abroad, then it fails on reliability, affordability, and safety.”
Burgum went on to argue that moving from a constant energy supply to a more sporadic one can actually lead to increased energy costs rather than savings. He pointed out that states which have undertaken such transitions often face costs that are at least 50% higher, as they need to ensure consistent supply during peak demands, such as when the sun isn’t shining or when there’s no wind.
President Trump has claimed to have reversed previous policies to emphasize energy independence, aiming for reliable and cost-effective energy. He envisions a scenario where the U.S. has enough energy resources to support its allies and diminish the influence of adversarial nations.
Burgum did not shy away from naming current threats, saying the real challenges faced by Trump’s administration involved Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities and China’s advancements in artificial intelligence. He pointed out that addressing these issues requires a strong strategy centered around energy dominance, a focus that Trump enacted right from the start of his presidency by declaring an energy emergency.
To support this initiative, Trump initiated the Energy Control Council, comprising a significant portion of his Cabinet, which works on everything from critical minerals to energy policy and regulation.
In conclusion, Burgum also critiqued the narrative on climate change as an “existential threat,” arguing instead that the Trump administration has effectively tackled real existential challenges.
