Sports enthusiasts eager to keep up with their favorite teams may soon find themselves facing steep costs. The rise in streaming service fees, coupled with soaring ticket prices, is making it increasingly challenging to enjoy live events.
According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, admission prices for sporting events have surged by 123% since 2000, based on data from the Consumer Price Index. Beyond general admission, fans often incur additional expenses for perks, transportation, and even merchandise, which, while not essential, adds up.
Ticket prices are also driven up by the secondary market, where various hidden charges often appear. Senator Eric Schmitt from Missouri believes there needs to be action on this issue. He mentioned during a recent show that the Senate Commerce Committee oversees professional and amateur sports, addressing situations like those involving Ticketmaster. He expressed a need for more transparency regarding ticket fees, suggesting that consumers often feel confused about the origin of these costs.
Kid Rock, the musician, voiced his concerns during a Senate hearing, asserting that issues surrounding ticket price gouging have pushed fans into high-priced resale markets. He described the experience of purchasing tickets for popular events as a “complete disaster.”
In response to growing frustrations, the FCC announced that it plans to gather public feedback on the ongoing transition of live sports from traditional broadcast channels to streaming services. Major leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB are increasingly shifting many of their games from cable and broadcast TV to streaming platforms.
