Sen. Joe Manchin tells GOP colleagues: ‘When you get a chance to secure the border, take it’

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-Virginia) had words Monday for his Republican colleagues who may be on the fence about voting on new border legislation later this week.

Asked if he would vote for a second attempt to pass border legislation, Schumer said he would always vote to secure the border “better than it is.”

“I would encourage my Republican friends to seize any opportunity to secure the border — no matter what the bargaining seems to be going on. We need it so badly. So we’re going to take it,” Schumer said.

His comments came a day after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told his colleagues that the Senate plans to vote on a bipartisan border security bill again this week. The effort in February suffered a setback when Republicans withdrew their support at the behest of former President Donald Trump.

The bill failed in a test vote in February by a vote of 49-50, falling short of the 60 votes needed to proceed.

Schumer criticized the Republican Party for acquiescing to the Republican front-runner in the presidential election. Republicans, on the other hand, opposed tying the bill to U.S. foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel. Schumer said the bill to be voted on this week would be standalone.

Republicans in both the House and Senate have signaled they will unite to thwart any hope of that. Border bill backed by Democrats to reach the finish line.
