Investigation into Protests in Los Angeles
Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, has initiated an investigation into a California-based leftist group following recent protests and riots in Los Angeles. On Wednesday, he addressed the Humanitarian Immigration Rights coalition, known as Chirla, highlighting their characterization of these events as “adjusting.”
Hawley’s social media post questioned, “Who is financing this unrest? This violence isn’t happening by chance. Given my role as chair of the Judicial Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, I find this alarming,” he stated.
In his letter to Chirla’s executive director, Angelica Salas, Hawley cited “credible reports” suggesting that the organization offers logistical and financial support to those involved in the disruptions.
“To be clear: funding civil disorder is not a form of protected speech. It fosters criminal behavior. Therefore, we must promptly curtail any further participation in organizing or supporting these unlawful activities,” he wrote.
The letter also demands that Chirla produce internal communications and financial records related to the planning of protests, including any third-party or vendor agreements.
Hawley requested travel records from individuals associated with the group if they were reimbursed by Chirla, as well as a list of their donors.
IRS documents reveal that Chirla received $34 million from the Biden administration, although previous funding from Donald Trump’s administration had been reduced. Nevertheless, Chirla has secured state and city funding to support attorneys assisting immigrants facing deportation.
Chirla has also been involved in creating the Rapid Response Network, a system that allows immigrants to report ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids and receive alerts to evade them.
Chirla has not responded to inquiries from Fox News Digital.
Trump has previously expressed his belief that many of those participating in the Los Angeles protests are not genuine protesters but rather paid instigators. “The individuals causing unrest are professional agitators. They are troublemakers who should face legal consequences,” he remarked.
In response to Trump’s comments, California Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media, stating, “The U.S. President has now called for the arrest of a sitting governor. This is a day I never thought I would witness in America. Party affiliation aside, this is concerning.”
