Shaquille O’Neal Covers Funeral Costs for Young Girl
Shaquille O’Neal has stepped forward to cover the funeral expenses for a 12-year-old girl from Georgia, who passed away shortly after collapsing during a school fight.
The former NBA star expressed his desire to ease the financial strain on the family of Jada West, who died in a hospital on March 8, stating that no parent should have to face the heartache of burying their child. “If there’s anything I can do to alleviate that burden, it’s the right thing to do,” O’Neal remarked.
His offer was publicized in a joint announcement from the sheriff’s offices in Douglas County, where the incident occurred, and Henry County, where O’Neal resides and plays a role as the community relations director. Both counties are situated close to Atlanta.
The circumstances surrounding the girl’s death are currently under investigation by police in Villa Rica, located approximately 30 miles west of Atlanta. Reports indicate that a physical altercation involving Jada and another girl took place on March 5, shortly after school as she was being dropped off at a bus stop. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries three days later.
Police spokesman Spencer Crawford shared that investigators are examining cellphone footage of the fight that circulated on social media, depicting the two girls engaging in a brawl after the school bus had departed. The footage captures them falling to the ground before bystanders intervene, concluding with Jada gathering her belongings and walking away.
However, she was unable to return home. Emergency responders were later dispatched following reports of a “boy in cardiac arrest lying in the street,” complicating the situation further.
The autopsy results, which might clarify the cause of death, have yet to be made public.
In a recent social media post, Lindsey McClendon Pettiford, Jada’s aunt, announced that the funeral is set for Saturday.
