Shedeur Sanders attributes ’99 percent’ of online negativity directed at him to his father, Deion.

Chedure Sanders: Facing Challenges Head-On

A complicated relationship with a father and, perhaps, a similarly strained connection with some of his peers.

The journey of quarterback Chedure Sanders in the NFL—specifically, how he ended up falling to the Browns in the fifth round of the draft—is still somewhat unclear. However, Chedure has some thoughts on why he seems to draw skepticism even before he throws his first professional pass.

It isn’t really because he’s impolite or overly confident.

His father, Deion Sanders, who is not only a Hall of Famer but also the Colorado Football coach and an NFL analyst, has attracted his share of criticisms over the years. Despite being celebrated as one of the best cornerbacks ever, Deion’s personality may have rubbed some people the wrong way.

This background is why Chedure chooses to create his own identity and prefers to associate with kids who aren’t familiar with his father’s legacy.

“Honestly, I think that about 99% of the negativity directed at me comes from my dad’s reputation,” Chedure shared while engaging with students in Ohio. “I mean, they didn’t witness his games… It’s really the older crowd that seems to have a problem, not the younger generation.”

Interestingly, the Giants took a significant interest in Chedure before the draft. Their front office considered him a strong first-round candidate. However, they ultimately opted for someone else, Jackson Dirt, as the draft approached.

Deion Sanders has also indicated that false narratives about his son may have contributed to Chedure’s lower draft position.

At Browns training camp, Chedure finds himself competing with notable players like Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, yet he’s particularly keen on engaging with the Cleveland community.

“I really enjoy going to schools and meeting kids,” Chedure remarked. “I tell them they can ask me anything, no filters. They can choose whatever question they want, and I’m here to answer all of them honestly.”
