Shotgun-toting resident shoots homeless man who broke into his home, California police say

California police say residents used shotguns shoot A homeless man whose home was broken into around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

El Cerrito Police said in a press release that officers were called to a residence on Elm Street for a report of a shooting.

“This is the quietest neighborhood I've ever lived in!”

When they arrived, they found a 56-year-old transient man with a gunshot wound. He was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment.

Police determined that the shooter was a resident of the home and took him into custody for questioning. After an investigation, police said that the man believed the intruder was armed and feared for his life so he fired two shots.

Investigators determined the intruder did not have a gun, but instead had a flashlight. Police plan to ask the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office to charge the suspect with theft.

A nearby high school was placed on lockdown after the shooting, but it was lifted after the scene was secured.

Police said the homeless man is from Contra Costa County, and KTVU said he has an extensive criminal record for burglary and burglary. Investigators are looking into whether the resident legally owned the gun.

“This has never happened in my neighborhood,” resident Nikkio Hunt told KTVU. “This is the quietest neighborhood I've ever lived in!”
