Perhaps this is why singer Jason DeFord, known as Jelly Roll, had a tough time with the negative feedback regarding his political jokes.

Tears of a clown
Jelly Roll wrapped up his week as the guest host on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Thursday, delivering a nearly 20-minute monologue that tackled the criticism stemming from his jokes about President Donald Trump’s weight.
Even though his jokes didn’t cross the line into bad taste — he joked that Trump probably couldn’t see his own genitalia — it seemed he was taken aback by the reaction to appearing on a notably liberal talk show.
Throughout his segment, Jelly Roll attempted to clarify that he didn’t identify strongly with either the liberal or conservative side.
“Just because I watched a fight on TV doesn’t mean I support everything this administration does,” he stated about a UFC event at the White House. “And just because I hosted Jimmy Kimmel’s show doesn’t mean I share all his political views. I lean left on some issues, but like most people, I’m pretty much in the middle. I’m a Christian, a country music artist, a farmer, and I enjoy bow hunting.”
He then jokingly called out Kimmel’s backstage staff, labeling them as “communist Antifa friends” and the most skilled group of “Chihuahua-hugging, oat-milk latte-loving lefties on Earth.”
From that point, the 41-year-old shared an emotional, tearful plea about the importance of loving one’s neighbor, emphasizing that dignity and compassion should transcend politics. Still, his overall message seemed to suggest support for illegal immigration.
“Pain and healing don’t recognize political boundaries,” Jelly Roll remarked. “The hurt that people feel matters more than poll numbers, and there are no borders when it comes to broken families.”
After asserting that “the American dream should be for everyone,” he referenced Jesus’ teachings regarding neighbors.
“There was no asterisk after the word neighbor. No political party exceptions. It didn’t matter where you were born. There wasn’t a clause saying, ‘Unless you’re scared of them.’ It just said, ‘Love your neighbor.’
Fair shake
In front of a rather divided crowd, Jelly Roll felt he needed to clarify the handshake he had with Trump at a UFC event in 2024.
He mentioned that he would “always” shake the president’s hand when asked, adding that his father would have been “upset” if he hadn’t.
“I’m proud I could shake the hand of the President of the United States. And I’m also proud to live in a nation where I can make jokes about him,” Jelly Roll said.
However, he made sure the Kimmel audience understood that he frequently disagrees with the president.
“Taking a photo with a political figure—or anyone, really—doesn’t mean I agree with their policies. I often don’t agree at all,” he stated.
Both sides now
The heartfelt speech ended with Jelly Roll expressing his appreciation for free speech and, despite hinting at his liberal tendencies, his frustration with both political parties.
“I believe in the same free speech both sides claim to value until they hear something they dislike,” he pointed out.
He placed the blame on “politicians and algorithms” for convincing the public that their struggles were due to “the person across the street,” before expressing:
“Our leaders, from both parties, are doing a terrible job of bringing us together, y’all.”
