The arrests of immigrants along the southwest border with Mexico fell to historically low levels Friday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Agents encountered 199 immigrants on Friday, compared to 4,393 people a year ago.
Texas DPS spokesman Chris Olivares posted a report on X on Friday showing that he met 199 immigrants who illegally crossed the US-Mexico border. Olivares said the numbers reflect a “historic low” in the number of migrants that have crossed ports of entry.
Olivares reported that this represents a 95% decrease from the 4,393 immigrants arrested the same day a year ago.
Of the 199 immigrants encountered on Friday, 135 were arrested in five Texas-based border departments. This is a 35% decrease from the average of 208 reported last week of 208.
Olivares said the state is adopting a “all Texas” approach to support the Trump administration's efforts related to border security.
“Through a Texas-wide approach under government@gregabbott_txOperation Star, we deploy advanced tracking techniques, specialized teams and cutting-edge technology to detect, deter and dismantle criminal networks operating along borders,” Olivares wrote. “This collaboration is essential to keeping Texans safe and ensuring that those who pose a threat to our community are brought to justice.”
