Six Lives Lost as Ukraine and Russia Exchange Missile and Drone Attacks

Escalating Attacks in Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine — A Russian ballistic missile hit Kiev early Sunday, setting off a fire and leaving at least three civilians injured. Later, attacks across other regions of Ukraine resulted in the deaths of at least two people, according to local reports.

This wave of airstrikes comes amidst successful Ukrainian drone operations that have hindered Russian military progress, leading to fuel shortages and heightened pressure on President Vladimir Putin.

In eastern Ukraine, which is occupied by Russia, a drone strike reportedly killed four civilians in Horlivka. The city’s Russian-appointed mayor, Ivan Prikhodko, mentioned the area had been under attack since the early morning hours on Sunday.

During the night, Russian forces took down 133 Ukrainian drones operating over Russia, the Black Sea, and Crimea—territory that Russia annexed in 2014, as stated by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

An explosion jolted Kiev early on Sunday, with debris causing a fire in a high-rise building close to the historic district. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that falling fragments ignited other buildings, vehicles, and parking areas. Three individuals were hurt, with one requiring hospitalization.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in a speech on Friday night, issued a warning based on intelligence reports indicating that Russia was gearing up for a major missile offensive, potentially within the next 48 hours.

The Russian Ministry of Defense asserted that the recent assault on Kiev targeted a facility involved in drone production.

Additionally, on Sunday, a drone attack in Kharkiv—the second largest city in Ukraine—resulted in one death and injuries to at least six others, including two children, as per Mayor Igor Terekhov’s announcement. In the southern city of Zaporizhia, a glide bomb killed one individual and injured several others, according to Mayor Ivan Fedorov.

Kharkiv and Zaporizhia often face Russian bombardments, with Zaporizhia being just over 20 kilometers from the front lines and experiencing heavy shelling in recent months.

A significant Russian airstrike near Kiev on Friday resulted in at least ten fatalities and about 100 injuries. This barrage is part of a broader wave of retaliatory strikes that may complicate the resolution of the ongoing conflict.

Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubbe claimed on Sunday that “Ukraine’s position is stronger than ever since the war began.” He underlined the importance of continued support from partners to sustain Ukraine’s momentum, hinting at recent drone campaigns targeting critical Russian energy infrastructures.

On the same day, Romanian President Nixor Dan revealed that their military intercepted another drone violating its airspace, marking the third such incident in three days. He described these occurrences as “unacceptable.” Dan noted that, earlier that morning, a Romanian Air Force F-16 had shot down an unmanned aircraft over Romania’s water territory.

The day prior, another drone was brought down near the border with Ukraine in a less populated area. Another incident occurred on Friday near Padina, northeast of the capital, Bucharest. An investigation into the Friday drone concluded that it was a Shahed-type drone commonly used in attacks against Ukraine.

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there have been multiple drone incursion incidents within Romania and other NATO member nations.
