Local Elections Result in DSA Wins
Democratic New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani was among at least six candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) who secured local positions in the recent elections.
Kelsey Bond won in Atlanta, Georgia; Denzel McCampbell in Detroit, Michigan; Danny Nowell in Carrboro, North Carolina; Aya al-Zubi in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Frankie Fritz in Greenbelt, Maryland. These victories suggest a growing trend of DSA candidates challenging the establishment, particularly through Mamdani’s success.
The DSA celebrated al-Zubi’s election with a tweet highlighting her commitment to housing rights for residents in Cambridge, signaling her determination to make the city more affordable for all.
In Minnesota, Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey and DSA-endorsed Omar Fateh were leading in the city’s ranked-choice voting results. Meanwhile, DSA candidate Will Burnley Jr. faced defeat against Jake Wilson in Somerville, Massachusetts.
The DSA had endorsed 18 candidates throughout the year and released a statement celebrating Mamdani’s win, expressing their ongoing support for democratic socialists aiming for office across the nation. They noted their efforts are part of a broader movement to challenge oligarchies and advocate for working-class interests.
In their announcement, the DSA stated, “With Zoran’s victory, the people have defeated the oligarchy, and the working class has triumphed over big business.” They credited over 99,000 volunteers and millions of voters for this achievement, emphasizing the significant role played by the DSA’s members in New York City in mobilizing support.
On social media, Alex Soros shared a celebratory post about Mamdani’s victory, expressing his pride in being a New Yorker and affirming the ongoing relevance of the American Dream.
In Virginia, elections were also held for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, alongside a gubernatorial election in New Jersey. In Loudoun County, a liberal incumbent school board candidate lost to an independent challenger, Amy Riccardi, who advocated for policies separating school spaces based on biological sex.
